Southern Ocean Sailing Centre is a Yachting Australia Accredited Training
Centre
operating from the Victor Harbor Yacht Club, Bridge Terrace, Victor Harbor,
South Australia
The aims and objectives of the Southern
Ocean Sailing Centre are to foster the sport of sailing by;
·
Management of sail training on behalf of the Victor Harbor Yacht
Club.
·
Management of team sailing on behalf of all schools on the
·
Delivery of Yachting Australia training courses.
·
Ensure the safety and wellbeing of students, instructors and
coaches involved in the Southern Ocean Sailing Centre’s Activities
The program of activities for each year
include the following training courses and coaching sessions:
National Powerboat Handling
Scheme Theory & Practical
This course involves four
2 hour theory sessions and two full day practical sessions.
A certificate of
achievement is provided to competent powerboat operators at the end of the
course, which can be used to obtain a boat licence with no further testing
required.
This course is usually
scheduled to be conducted during the months of July and August.
Assistant
Instructor’s Training Course
The qualifications for an
Assistant Instructor are as follows;

Member of the
·
Competent dinghy sailor (e.g. Have passed a Basic Skills Sail
Training Course),
·
Completed the Assistant Instructor’s Training Course, &
·
Police check for members over 18 years of age
The Assistant
Instructor’s Training Course consists of one full days training. This course is usually scheduled to be
conducted in September.
Basic Skills Sail
Training
The aim of this course is
to give participants the confidence and skills in sailing a dinghy, tying
sailing knots, rigging and de-rigging and an understanding of common sailing
terminology.
This course involves
eight 2 hour training sessions.
This course is usually scheduled to be conducted during the months of
October, November and December. Suitable for ages 11+
The fee payable for the course
is

Adult - $315
·
Junior (11 – 18) - $215
This covers:
·
One year membership to Victor Harbor Yacht Club and Yachting
Australia
·
Accidental insurance cover
·
All text books
·
Use of sail training equipment (boats, PFD’s, etc. as
required)
Coaching for Schools Team
Sailing Competitions
South Australian Schools
Team Sailing Competitions are held in March and April each year. Students wishing to participate in these
competitions must be;
·
A primary or secondary student,
·
Aged over 12 and under 19 years,
·
A member of a sailing club, and
·
A competent dinghy sailor (e.g. Have passed a Basic Skills Sail
Training course).
Coaching students for
Team Sailing usually involves about 4 hours each week and is scheduled to be
conducted during the months of February, March and April.
